5…4…3…2…1! BOOM! That’s what I did before deciding to sit down and write out this blog post. The truth is, LATELY I’ve been slacking. Not just with keeping in contact with you (for that I’m SO sorry. kicking myself for it..), but in so many areas of my life right now.
My morning routine… Productivity… Patience…
But it’s no excuse! Just recently I dove into this AMAZING book called The 5 Second Rule. It’s by Mel Robbins, and it’s seriously changing not just MY attitude and life, but my KIDS’ TOO!
I’m sure you’re wondering what this 5-4-3-2-1 thing is all about….
Well basically, I’m giving myself 5 seconds to THINK before I DO. Any time I catch myself in a negative pattern, hitting the snooze button when I’m supposed to be getting up to help the kids out the door for school for example, I count backwards from 5, and do what I’m really SUPPOSED to be doing. So why did I choose that analogy to explain it? Because it’s one of the most COMMON habits that feed into negative thought patterns, procrastination, and limiting beliefs. Hitting the snooze button may actually be stopping you from reaching your full potential.
Think about this for a second. Around 65% of adults hit the snooze button in the morning. Based on the human sleep cycle, which is around 75 minutes long, each time we’re pressing that snooze bar we’re allowing our brains to restart the cycle of sleep. So when your 10 minutes is up, you’re brain has already taken the signal to BEGIN that 75 minute block of time, and you find yourself getting up groggy and in a fog.
No wonder some of us are bears in the morning, right?!
What if instead, we converted that extra 15 minutes of sleep into 15 minutes of silence and thought gathering? What if we IGNORED the emails, text messages, social media etc and allowed ourselves just 15-30 minutes to make a game plan for the day, or fill ourselves with positivity or prayer or WHATEVER it is you wish you had more time for? How much less stressed would you feel?!
But this 5 second rule does not just apply to getting up early in the morning. You can use it for SO MUCH MORE!
So you know that thing you’ve been thinking about but can’t seem to make a decision…
5…4…3…2…1 GO DO IT! Stop questioning and doubting yourself. Take a deep breath, count back from 5, and take action.
See you next week!
